The Mazel Company
Began with Reuven Dessler and Jake Koval meeting and becoming good friends in their high school days. Their friendship grew over the years as their families grew. This is one of the many important things to both of them and is what would prove to make their relationship stronger. In fact, the friendship would eventually become a partnership that would create The Mazel Company.
Reuven Dessler worked for American Greetings in the Marketing Department. Jake Koval worked for Troutman as a Salesman, selling blue jeans. One day after Reuven decided that he needed to start his own company he looked to his good friend Jake Koval. Reuven had acquired two products, a Ziggy clock and a Holly Hobby wallet. Reuven went to his friend Jake and asked him to help in selling these items to one of Jake’s customers in Kentucky. Jake was reluctant since these items were not in his area of expertise. Jake woke up one morning to find the items on the back of his car that Reuven had left for him. Jake would take the items along with him on his sales call in Kentucky, where after showing them the items the buyer agreed to purchase 1,000 of each. While returning from Kentucky, Jake made another stop in Columbus, Ohio for another sales appointment and again presented the items to the buyer. This buyer had agreed to purchase 2,000 of each item. It was then that they realized that this was going to be a successful and profitable relationship.
In 1975, Reuven and Jake would officially open the doors of The Mazel Company as a wholesaler of name brand closeout merchandise. No item was turned down as they would buy and then sell merchandise in every category with no amount being too small or large. During the start of The Mazel Company, there was a small staff of Nate Levitansky, David Lipins and of course Reuven Dessler and Jake Koval. The company started out in the basement of a warehouse in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1987 the company and had now grown to over 70 people and needed more space. We moved to Solon, Ohio that is a suburb of the Cleveland, Ohio area. The Mazel Company would occupy a facility with offices and a warehouse of over one million square feet and would expand into other states..
The Mazel Company has worked with many name brand retailers over the years. One of the first customers of The Mazel Company was Christmas Tree Shops. Today, The Mazel Company has well over 1,000 customers it does business with. This is just one more example of why The Mazel Company is a leader in the industry as being one of the largest Wholesalers of Closeout merchandise.
